# Scams in Greece: what to watch for right now

The Hellenic Police cybercrime line 11188 received 89,343 calls in 2024, about 240 a day.

### Fake relative emergency calls

Hellenic Police warned in January 2025 about callers posing as doctors, lawyers, police officers or hospital staff who say a relative caused a serious accident or needs urgent surgery, and demand money straight away.

The same police warning describes criminals posing as tax office, bank or insurance employees who promise a refund that you must first pay something to receive.

### Fake police calls offering to recover crypto

In April 2025 the Cyber Crime Directorate warned that criminals were spoofing its phone number, claiming victims had crypto accounts in their name and asking for personal or banking details to recover them. The real number cannot make outgoing calls.

Hellenic Police warn about cars, electronics and jewellery advertised online at suspiciously low prices, where buyers receive fake goods or nothing at all.

The Hellenic Capital Market Commission regularly warns about unlicensed online trading and crypto platforms, and in May 2025 police broke up two groups running fake investment companies from Athens, arresting 104 people.

## If you've been scammed in Greece

1. If someone is pressuring you for money right now, hang up and call the police on 100.
2. Contact your bank straight away through its official number to stop or recall any payment.
3. Report the scam to the Hellenic Police Cyber Crime Directorate on 11188 or at ccu@cybercrimeunit.gov.gr, or file a complaint online on gov.gr using your Taxisnet or e-banking login.
4. Before investing, check the warnings list of the Hellenic Capital Market Commission at hcmc.gr.
