Why QR codes are used in scams
A QR code hides its destination. You can't read it, and your email filter often can't either. That's why scammers now use them in parking payment stickers, fake parcel cards, restaurant tables, letters and "security update" emails. This is sometimes called quishing. What the QR code checker shows you
- What's inside the code: a web link, Wi-Fi network, phone number, text message, payment request or plain text.
- The real website behind any link, and whether it copies a brand, bank, parking company or government service.
- Payment warnings for crypto and UPI codes. Scanning a payment code only ever sends money, it never receives it.
Signs of a fake QR code
- A sticker placed over the original code on a parking meter, poster or charger.
- A code in an email asking you to log in, reset a password or confirm a payment.
- A card through the door or a letter you weren't expecting, with a code to "rearrange delivery".
- A code sent by a buyer or seller who says you must scan it to receive money.
- After scanning, a page that asks for your card details, login or a download.
How to scan QR codes safely
- Look at the address your camera shows before you tap it, or use this checker.
- For parking, pay in the official app or on the council or company website you type yourself.
- Never scan a code to "receive" a payment.
- Don't install apps from QR codes. Use your phone's official app store.

Is it safe to scan a QR code with this checker?
Yes. The code is read on your own device and nothing opens automatically. We only send the link or text inside the code to our server to check it.
Does the camera work on iPhone and Android?
Yes, in up-to-date browsers. Your browser will ask for camera permission. If the camera doesn't work, take a photo of the code and upload it instead.
Can a QR code hack my phone by just scanning it?
Scanning shows you content, it doesn't run anything by itself. The risk is what happens next: opening a fake site, typing details, paying, joining a fake Wi-Fi network or installing an app.
Why do I need to scan a code to receive money?
You don't. Payment QR codes only send money. Anyone saying otherwise is trying to scam you.
What if the code is on a parking meter?
Check for a sticker over the original code. When in doubt, pay with the parking company's official app or website, or at the machine.
